My name is Holly Seeliger and I am running for the Portland School Board for District 2 in the November 2012 elections. As a Green Independent, I am committed to a clean election and values which represent the best interest of the children of Maine.
I grew up in the small Maine town of North Berwick where I attended Noble High School and moved to Portland to go to the University of Southern Maine. I am a recent graduate of the University of Southern Maine with a B.A. in Political Science, and have always had a passion for local community and activism. While in college I interned at the office of State Representative Tom Allen, volunteered at nursing homes, schools and travelled to China.
I am a certified Educational Technician III and am planning on entering a Master’s program in Education. I am a member of the West End Neighborhood Association, the League of Young Voters, Occupy Maine, and Pine Tree Youth Organizing.
If elected to the School Board I will support:
Better nutrition- I believe that good nutrition is vital for all children at our schools, and so I will push for the inclusion of local and organic produce into school breakfast and lunch programs.
Skills and career mentoring- As a recent graduate of a Maine high school and college, I understand the challenges faced by the youth in Maine regarding health, education, and work opportunity in the state. I believe that career mentoring and support, especially for high school students, must meet the needs of students leaving school as they proceed to college, or a skill or trade school, and enter intoMaine’s ever competitive workforce.
Arts and music at age levels- When children have access to the arts and music, they are able to think more innovatively, creatively, and as adults can make connections and solutions for the future.
I believe that I am an excellent candidate to represent the West End, and would love the opportunity to serve the city of Portland as a member of the School Board. I would appreciate your vote November 2012! To contact me, email holly.seeliger@gmail.com and you can follow my blog at https://hollyseeliger.wordpress.com
